Aangan: The period love story we have all been waiting for!
The unveiling of Aangan’s teasers on the same day as the release of Thugs of Hindostan may not be linked but it shows that Pakistani TV can match Bollywood’s big-budget films and even surpass them when it comes to quality content.
Adapted by Mustafa Afridi from Khadija Mastoor’s novel of the same name, and directed by Udaari famed Mohammad Ehteshamuddin, Aangan by Momina Duraid Productions, takes you back in the 1940s where life was simple but complicated at the same time.
The teasers prove that it was the era when love was pure, when people had time and when things were changing for the people of the sub-continent.
Let’s analyze the teasers and find out what can be in store for fans of Pakistani dramas in Pakistan and abroad and how it can infuse emotions into the stagnant drama industry.
The first teaser is all about Ahad Raza Mir and Sajal Aly, the ‘it’ pair of our entertainment industry. Ahad seems to be playing a poet here while Sajal wants to divert his attention to herself, by coming up with her own style of poetry.
The two share a crackling chemistry that isn’t usually seen on TV and after Yakeen Ka Safar, watching them together will be a treat for sure. Mawra’s presence in this 42-second teaser may not be that prominent but it shows that the actress can carry off the look from the 40s in style.
Then there is the second teaser where more is revealed about the play. Don’t be surprised to see a dashing old man appearing at the start of this teaser – you may not know him but he was the person behind Sang e Mar and adopted Khadija Mastoor’s novel Aangan for you too – Mustafa Afridi.
You then get to see veteran Abid Ali who is seen riding a tonga, that was considered the ride of the nawabs back in the day. Zeb Rehman of Bol fame leads the actresses here that include Mawra Hocane, Hira Mani, Sonya Hussyn, Rabia Butt and Uzma Hassan.
It is Sajal Aly who has the lion’s share in this teaser – with Ahad Raza Mir.
She seems to be a different actress who till now was famous for youngish roles. Here she looks mature, acts mature and is mature for a change, in a better way.
We all know that Ahsan Khan is playing two characters in the drama but so far, the look of just one has been made available for the audience. Along with Ahad Raza Mir, the two lead the star cast that also includes the veteran Abid Ali, Omair Rana, Shehroz Sabzwari and Ali Rizvi who look as if they have spent all their lives in the 1940s.
It wouldn’t be a surprise if you pause and play the trailer repeatedly because the beautiful cinematography and the stunning visuals will surely make you want to watch the teaser twice, or even more.
With Ehteshamuddin at the helm, one thing is certain that this play will shatter all records because it seems to be from another planet, such is the brilliance with which its teasers have been completed.
