Rewind 2017: From Sajal Aly to Hira Mani – A look at the best performances of the year

Spotlight   January 3, 2018
It's been a terrific year for female leads. Here are our favorites.

As 2017 comes to an end, we thought to look back at the stars who made this year a memorable one.

1.  Sajal Aly

Is there anything Sajal can’t do? Not only is she a gifted actress, she also sang the song “O Rungreza” and danced alongside Sana Fakhar in the play as well. Sajal was previously known for her acting skills but we now know that there is no end to Sajal’s talents as singer and as a dancer as well.

2.  Sania Saeed

Sania Saeed needs no introduction or explanation why she is in this list. She starred as the helpless wife of Gulistan Khan in Sang e Mar Mar, “Shamim” and a brutal self-made woman in “Sammi”. In both of these extremely varied roles, Sania Saeed shone and found the love of every viewer there was.

3. Uzma Hassan

Starring as Bano in Sang e Mar Mar, Uzma’s spiteful and convincing portrayal showed everyone what a powerhouse of talent she truly is. She is soon to be seen in a film opposite Shaan and is also seen on other tv dramas but Uzma’s superb acting chops are why she is a game-changer of 2017.

4. Kubra Khan

Kubra’s debut as “Shireen” in Sang e Mar Mar garnered her praise from critics and we saw her again in Alif Allah Aur Insaan in a completely opposite avatar as “Nazneen”. She was again seen in a short role in “Daldal” opposite Zahid Ahmed. Needless to say, we’re keeping a close eye on what Kubra’s next projects are.

5. Ushna Shah

Ushna’s role in Alif Allah Aur Insaan was a difficult and conflicted one. From her journey to depicting a beggar to becoming a courtesan took a range of talent and immense hard work. Ushna’s especially powerful depiction was her as a beggar where she had to have messy hair and bad teeth and speak in a very street-like fashion. That takes work and it has paid off!

6. Armeena Khan

Armeena Khan often stands up to bullies on social media and was awarded and lauded at various award shows as well as galas. The Pakistani-Canadian actress has often been a role model to many young women who follow her on Instagram and look up to her as a female celebrity. More power to you, Armeena!

7.  Hira Mani

Hira plays a woman with dissociative fugue in the drama “Pagli” where she has suffered a deep and dark trauma as a result of which she has dissociated with her past. She’s quick witted and smart as Gulrukh, the central character of Pagli and she breathes life into the character with her natural charm and off-hand demeanor. Pagli is a very well-crafted play and Hira shines in it. A little birdie has also told us that she would be soon doing a duet with her co-star Junaid Khan. We can’t wait!
